The Yaos' Festival for King Pang

The Yaos' Festival for King Pang falls on the 16th Day of the 10th Month by the lunar calendar, the birthday of King Pang. The festival originates from an ancient legend about a war between King Ping and Gao Wu, when King Ping offered rewards of huge wealth and marriage of his third daughter (princess) for killing Gao Wu. Then a man Pang Hu led King Ping's army for expedition and finally killed Gao Wu. To fulfill his promise, King Ping married his third daughter to Pang Hu and granted the groom the title of King Pang. King Pang and the Third Princess had six sons and six daughters, leaving 12 family names of the Yaos. So King Pang has been worshipped by the Yao people as their ancestor. During the festival chicken and pigs are slaughtered and old wine brought out for a feast with all villagers, when a spacious stage is put up for King Pang songs and dances all night till dawn, accompanied on the brass drums.
