The Hanis' New Year's Day "Gatangpa"
 
    "Gatangpa", the Hanis' New Year's Day falls on January 2-4 each year. In Hani ethnic language "Gatangpa" means "renewal of everything on earth" or "in commemoration of ancestor Tangpa". During the festival the Hanis are all dressed in splendid attire, slaughter pigs and chickens, pound cooked glutinous rice into paste, offer sacrifice to ancestors, and invite friends and relatives to dinner. Young men and women in groups climb mountains to pick wild flowers and fruits. And all men, old and young, go to a spacious ground and compete to whip a large top for fun. They all enjoy themselves to their hearts' content while bidding farewell to the old year and ushering in the new.
