Jinuo Ethnic Group

Jinuo ethnic people mainly inhabit the Jinuo mountain in Jinghong county, numbering around 18,000 and making up 3% of the total population of local ethnic minorities. According to ethnic identification by the State Council, Jinuo was recognized as the fifty-fifth ethnic minorities of the county.

The Jinuos believe in original religion of their own ethnic group and are worshippers of nature and their ancestors; also being animists, they believe that all things on earth have souls. The couple of sun drums, one standing for a male and the other a female, are the Jinuos' holiest sacrificial utensil and musical instrument. Taken as a reincarnation of gods and symbols of a village, in the Jinuos' belief, the drums bless the entire village to have a flourishing population and a bumper grain harvest. At ordinary times, they are sacrificial utensils kept in village chieftain's home and are not allowed to be felt and beaten. Only on the New Year's Day and on certain occasions of grand activities can it be used to accompany dances.
