Majority
of the residents in Xishuangbanna are from Dai ethnic group
with a population of 300,000 approximately, 35% of the total
in the prefecture, who has both spoken and written language.
The Dai people live in basins in compact communities. |

| The
ethnic group known as lover of water, most Dai ethnic villages are
by riversides.On a whole, the Dais are followers of Hinayana and there
is one for more monasteries in a Dai village. Their houses are built
on stilts, with two storeys. The upper storey serves as a living place,
while the lower space, is used as a storehouse for farm implements
and odds and ends, or as pens for livestock. Originally built with
bamboo, the Dai house is also called the Dais' bamboo house. Around
such a house are tropical fruit trees, which, in addition to the bamboo
house, tropical plants and monasteries, together form an eye-catching
painting scroll of a Dai rural village. |
