1.Established
in 1959, Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy
of Sciences at Menglun, locally known as Menglun botanical garden,
has become a paradise for botanical studies, tropical plants viewing,
relaxation and holidays. It boasts more than 7,000 species of tropical
plants, the most of its kind in China, with diverse, orderly distributed
flora landscapes. In addition, it stores many ancient plants known
as "living flora fossils" dating back over 1,000,000 years.
2.Mangdian is a scenic area with unique tropical
valleys and rainforests, and mountain springs to form a waterfall
(Mangdian waterfall) running down through forests at the end. Among
the valleys are limpid streams flowing down cliffs sided by dense
forests, forming a tropical landscape of mountain, rock, water and
forest. In the dry season from November to April of next year, the
transparent waterfall down the valleys, with a fall of 25 meters in
some 10 gradients, sprinkles down from the cliff tops, like a roll
of thin, transparent silk; and in the rainy season from May to October
of next year, in particular, in July and August, it rushes down to
the plain in a width of 10 meters.
3.The tropical botanical gardens in Xishuangbanna
and Menglun are ideal destinations for tropical plants and flowers.
The gardens cover an area of 1,200 mu (Chinese unit of area, 1 mu
= 1/15 hectares), where approximately 1,000 species of tropical flowers
to vie with one another for beauty and fascination in all the four
seasons, many of which are rare flowers introduced from abroad. Among
the cultivated flowers and grasses in orderly arrangement are also
some wild flowers, with a faint, inviting fragrance.
4.Mengla "looking-into-the-sky tree"
tropical rainforest and Menglun botanical garden are two scenic areas
for stroll in the forest and view of tropical plants. Tall, evergreen
dipteroarpaceae at Mengla (locally named "looking-into-the-sky
tree"), 60 meters in height on an average, 20 meters higher than
any other vegetation types, form a landscape of "tree-over-tree"
in the forest. Walking along the "air corridor" in the tall
trees, one can get a bird's view of the entire forest and enjoy the
head-on wind, fresh and cool.
5.Sanchahe and Mangdian scenic areas are destinations
for stroll in the tropical forests. In Sanchahe primary forest there
is a long valley where herds of wild elephants often gather to drink
and play with the water, hence the name "wild elephant ravine".
The trickling stream and timbo bending to paths seem to welcome every
tourist. Deep in the valley are dwellings in trees that cater to tourists'
view of wild elephants' arrival at the stream for drinking at night.
After stroll in the forest for some time, tourists can take a 4,000-meter-long
cableway and get a bird's view of the vast primary forest with layer-upon-layer
trees.
