Letting off Kongming Lantern

Letting off Kongming Lantern is a key activity during the water splashing festival. On the evening of the Dais' New Year's Day, huge oval lanterns are let off into the sky to make add some tiny "stars". The lantern is called "Gongfei" in Dai ethnic language, and can be translated into Chinese as "fire lamp" of "Kongming lantern".
It is said that the Buddhist fire lamp and the original religion's fireworks once compete to fly into the sky, the highest meaning to win the rights to publicize its religion. As a result, the fire lamp was far ahead and made Buddhism gain a ruling position in the region. Since then, the Dai people have been having their spiritual sustenance through letting off the lantern (lamp), tying to the bottom some paper money and other offerings for their deceased relatives, to send all these to the heaven along with the relatives' souls. Today the local people, by doing so, also are to send their ideal and bright expectation to afar and the future...
